2021+ Ford F-150 Raptor Suspension Upgrade Guide

FG / Setup Guide 053
2021+ Ford F-150 Raptor Suspension Upgrade Guide

In brief

The 2021+ Gen 3 Raptor already has a sophisticated foundation: long-travel independent front suspension, a five-link coil-spring rear and electronically controlled FOX internal-bypass dampers. Upgrade it only after identifying the missing result. Height, added-load support, geometry and greater damping capacity are separate jobs.

Identify the Raptor before the parts

Record model year, 35- or 37-inch factory package, Raptor or Raptor R, current shock part numbers, tire size and permanent added weight. The Gen 3 platform has evolved. Early trucks use FOX 3.1 Live Valve hardware, while later equipment can include Dual Live Valve dampers. Springs and control components do not automatically interchange across every package.

FOX describes the 2021 system as position-sensitive internal bypass combined with electronic control that reads vehicle and terrain inputs. That means an upgrade should preserve or deliberately replace an integrated strategy, not treat the original shock as a generic monotube.

Start with condition and service

A tired shock can feel like a poor spring choice. Inspect for leakage, bushing wear, shaft damage, uneven ride height and electronic faults. Record mileage and use. A Raptor that spends time on washboard or at desert speed can consume service life faster than one driven mainly on pavement.

If the original behavior was correct and has gradually disappeared, rebuild or replacement may be smarter than redesigning the truck.

Springs change height and support

A front spring kit can add ride height while retaining the factory electronic shocks. Rear springs can support permanent bed weight or alter stance. The chosen spring needs to match the package and load.

Eibach offers Gen 3 spring packages designed around the original FOX electronic dampers. ICON offers front springs, rear triple-rate coils and systems that retain factory electronic functionality. Their published lift figures change with Raptor, Raptor R, 35- or 37-inch equipment and added rear weight.

Do not combine springs and collars casually. Manufacturers place limits on stacked lift methods because working position, droop and component clearance still matter.

Control arms serve geometry, not decoration

At added front height, the upper control arm may help recover alignment range, joint articulation and component clearance. It should be selected as part of the height-and-travel package. A billet arm does not improve the ride merely by being billet.

Align the truck at its normal working weight and follow any required driver-assistance calibration procedure.

When to replace the Live Valve shocks

Replacement performance dampers earn their cost when the truck needs more sustained heat capacity, a different force curve, additional adjustment or serviceable race-style hardware beyond the stock package.

FOX offers upgraded Live Valve internal-bypass front and rear dampers for the Raptor platform. ICON offers RXT rear bypass shocks and electronic adjustment options. These are not automatic upgrades for every driver. Their advantage appears when the terrain, pace and load repeatedly use the added capacity.

Four build paths

Restore the original truck: service or replace worn factory dampers, correct tire pressure and align it.

Add stance and modest clearance: use package-correct springs while preserving electronic shock function and usable droop.

Carry permanent weight: choose rear coils developed for the actual constant load, then confirm the dampers control it.

Increase sustained off-road pace: move toward larger or more sophisticated dampers, matched springs and the service plan that comes with them.

The result we want

The Raptor should settle cleanly after a bump, retain tire contact across repeated inputs and use its travel without living on the bump stops. It should also remain composed during the highway miles that connect the trail sections.

Begin with the behavior, not the lift number. The factory truck is capable enough that every replacement part should have a specific job.
